How to burn your candle

  • Your candle should be placed in a room that is well-ventilated, though away from a draft or fans. Air movement will make the flame flicker, causing sooting (black marks on the vessel). The candle should also be placed away from objects that can get close to the flame.
  • It is good practice to burn your candle for up to four or five hours at a time, though for a minimum of at least an hour. This avoids “tunneling” leaving excessive wax around the parameter of the vessel. Burning for more than five hours may cause the wick to move towards the side of the vessel, something known as wax migration.
  • It is safe to burn your candle until is reaches about ½ inch from the bottom of the vessel. At that point, you have gotten the most out of your candle and it’s time to order a new one!

How to care for wicks

  • Always keep the area around the wick free of debris, like match tips and wick trimmings. These items can act like a secondary wick which you want to avoid.
  • As you burn the candle, the wick may tend to migrate away from the center of the candle and closer to the vessel wall. After you extinguish the flame, the wick should be re-positioned back to the center of the vessel.
  • Keep an eye on the length of the wick. For best performance the wick should be about ¼ inch once the wax has hardened. Wicks can be easily trimmed with a nail clipper.

How to store your candle

  • When you are not using your candle, it should be kept in a cool, dry place covered with a tightly fitting lid, preferably the one that came with your candle. This will keep the surface of the wax free of dust and dirt which can affect the way the candle burns.
  • If you notice condensation on the vessel or wax surface, that is usually an indication that the storage area is not sufficiently dry or cool. Any moisture should be wiped away before lighting the candle.
  • Scented candles are designed to be enjoyed as soon as you buy them. That is when they are most fresh and smell great. So try as use them as soon as they arrive; otherwise you compromise the best part of the candle!
